9/16/2011

ASTON – Rep. Steve Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) announced today that the deadline to apply for the Federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has been extended to Friday, Sept. 23, at 5 p.m.  The original deadline for AFG applications was Friday, Sept. 9.

“The incredible amount of rain and flooding we have seen in Pennsylvania over these past few weeks has kept our first responders very busy,” said Barrar.  “We have had three disasters in the past month on the east coast between the unprecedented earthquake, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, and I am very glad for the understanding FEMA has shown by extending the application period for this important grant.”

A total of $404 million is available through the AFG program.  Eligible projects include:

·         Firefighter training.

·         Firefighting equipment.

·         Firefighter Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

·         Firefighter wellness and fitness.

·         Modifications to fire stations and facilities.

The AFG program also provides funding to Emergency Medical Service (EMS) organizations, including non-affiliated EMS entities, if they are public or non-profit in status.

More information about the AFG program and other FEMA initiatives is available at FEMA.gov.

Barrar noted that state assistance for volunteer fire companies also is currently available through the Pennsylvania 2011-12 Volunteer Fire Company, Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program (VFCVASGP).  The application period for this program is open through Friday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m.  The VFCVASGP, which funds a total of $25 million in grants through state gaming proceeds, is available to volunteer fire, EMS and rescue organizations.
