Hackett, Barrar Named Legislators of the Year
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Emergency Number Association (PA NENA) has named Reps. Joe Hackett (R-Delaware) and Stephen E. Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) as Legislators of the Year for 2011.

“It is an honor to receive this recognition from the people who stand on the frontlines in the battle to ensure our health and safety,” Hackett said. “They, along with our police and firefighters, are the real heroes.”

“It is very humbling to be recognized by an organization that does so much good for this Commonwealth,” said Barrar. “It has been a pleasure to work with NENA to ensure Pennsylvanians have access to an advanced emergency response system. I look forward to continuing to collaborate on issues that impact the lives and safety of our citizens.”

PA NENA recognized Hackett and Barrar for their efforts to protect the geographical information of 9-1-1 callers. Hackett sponsored House Bill 1174 to exempt 9-1-1 records that contain identifying information from the state’s Right-to-Know Law, unless a court determines disclosure is in the public interest. Barrar was a leading co-sponsor of the legislation and brought attention to its importance as majority chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee. The bill passed the House unanimously and is now awaiting consideration by the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee.

NENA’s mission is to foster the technological advancement, availability, and implementation of a universal emergency telephone number system. The protection of human life, the preservation of property and the maintenance of general community security are among NENA’s objectives.
