Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Grant Application Deadline Extended, Says Barrar
HARRISBURG – Rep. Stephen E. Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) announced today that volunteer fire companies, rescue organizations and ambulance services have more time to apply for the 2011 Volunteer Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program (VFCVASGP) now that the deadline has been extended to Nov. 4.

“Our volunteers have responded to an unprecedented amount of calls in the past few weeks due to the back-to-back storms,” said Barrar. “I applaud Fire Commissioner Ed Mann for extending the application period for this important grant.”

Due to extensive statewide flooding, the original grant deadline was extended by two weeks to Friday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m.

The grants may be used for construction or renovation of a unit’s station, the purchase or repair of equipment, training or debt reduction. The maximum grant amount is $15,000 for volunteer fire companies and $10,000 for volunteer ambulance services. A total of $25 million will be awarded through the program.

Grants to eligible fire companies will be contingent on their agreeing to participate in and report information using the Pennsylvania Fire Information Reporting System (PennFIRS).

Barrar noted he has introduced legislation to reauthorize the grant program before it expires on Dec. 31, and has authored a proposal to increase the total amount of funding available for the program to $40 million.

“Our volunteers do so much for our communities and the value they add to ensuring our safety is immeasurable,” said Barrar. “I am always impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm our volunteers show in the pursuance of their duties. I believe the grant program is a worthy cause that deserves additional funding.”

Funding for the program does not come from the state’s General Fund, but is distributed from the State Gaming Fund.
