Barrar Dedicates New Vans to Veterans Organization
10/25/2011

HARRISBURG – Rep. Stephen E. Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware), majority chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, joined the Disabled American Veterans Association (DAV) Department of Pennsylvania today to dedicate 14 new vans the association will use to transport veterans to medical appointments at Veterans Administration (VA) facilities throughout the Commonwealth.

Rep. Stephen E. Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) holds the keys to one of 14 new vans turned over to the Disabled American Veterans Association (DAV) Department of Pennsylvania today during a ceremony to dedicate the vehicles. The vehicles are purchased with state funding, and the DAV uses them to transport disabled and sick veterans to Veterans Administration (VA) medical appointments. The VA maintains and provides fuel for the vehicles.

“This effort to assist Pennsylvania’s veterans is a shining example of public-private cooperation that bridges the levels of government,” said Barrar.  “This represents a program where everyone is pitching in to help those men and women who have done so much for our nation.  Veterans are America’s heroes, and they have earned this assistance.  They deserve our eternal gratitude.”

The vans dedicated today were purchased from Ford Motor Company with the use of state dollars.  The DAV provides volunteer drivers for the vans.  The federal VA maintains and provides fuel for the vehicles.

Pennsylvania is home to 10 VA hospitals and nearly 40 VA-administered, community-based outpatient clinics.  DAV volunteer drivers transport sick and disabled veterans to medical appointments at these facilities.

“Chairing the Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee is the best job I have ever had because I get to serve our veterans,” said Barrar, himself a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.  “These men and women kept their promise to our nation when they were called to serve, and it is our responsibility to ensure their proper care.  This is such a wonderful program, and it is humbling to have been a part of this ceremony.”
