Barrar Supports Reauthorization of State Fire and Ambulance Grant Program

HARRISBURG – Rep. Stephen E. Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) is hailing passage of Senate Bill 866, which will reauthorize the soon-to-expire State Fire and EMS Grant Program through 2016.

“This is a very successful and popular grant program that has measurably helped many of Pennsylvania’s struggling fire and ambulance organizations,” said Barrar.  “Many of these organizations rely on funding from chicken barbeques and bingo to fund their public safety programs, so the grant provides a much-needed boost for the purchase of turnout gear, apparatus and other items necessary to protect Pennsylvania’s citizens.”

Senate Bill 866, which is similar to Barrar’s House Bill 955, would not only reauthorize the grant program, but it also would increase the total funding available by $5 million and would expand the program to include some paid fire departments.

Barrar, who is majority chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, noted this legislation has been a priority for him personally and for the committee this session.  He and Rep. Chris Sainato (D-Beaver/Lawrence), minority chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, were instrumental in brokering an agreement on the legislation.

“I thank Fire Commissioner Ed Mann; Chairman Sainato, my colleagues on the committee, and everyone else who went to bat for Pennsylvania’s first responders,” said Barrar.  “In the end, it is not about whose name is on the bill, but it comes down to the safety of the men and women who risk their lives to protect our communities.  Firefighters and EMS providers are our local heroes, and this grant will help them to serve their mission.”

Senate Bill 866 will now go to the governor for his signature.  The act would take effect immediately when signed.
