Barrar Celebrates Contributions of Nurse Anesthetists
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania House of Representatives today approved legislation authored by Rep. Stephen E. Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) to recognize the work of nurse anesthetists by designating Jan. 20-26 as “Nurse Anesthetists Week” in Pennsylvania.

“Nurse anesthetists play an integral role in our health care system, and they deserve acknowledgment for all they do,” said Barrar. “If you have ever had surgery, given birth, or been involved in a trauma that required anesthesia, you probably had a nurse anesthetist as part of your treatment team.”

House Resolution 29 states that nurse anesthetists were the first professional group to provide anesthesia in the United States and are the oldest recognized group of advanced practice registered nurse specialists.

Barrar noted that nurse anesthetists are particularly important in rural hospitals, where they are heavily relied upon to provide anesthesia. They also provide anesthetic services to the United States military and to the United States Veterans’ Administration.
